**In order to receive the "eco" certification from the certified body, the cotton was organically grown, harvested, and fibers spun according to a certain organic protocol. Part of that organic protocol prohibits the use of bleach or acids to treat the fibers. Those black specks that you are seeing in the yarn are pieces of the cotton plant (a combination of the outer calyx or bud of the flower, seeds and the fluffy white cotton) which are left behind during the manufacturing process, and are normally burned away using bleach or harsh chemicals that break down the natural fibers and flush some more of the plant matter out. It is part of the beauty and nature of the yarn as an organically certified yarn. We find that after use (knit or crochet) and washing, most of the natural plant matter falls off on its own.**
